A Question of Innocence – Documentary Film

There was an incredibly tight turnaround to get this documentary out the door, made more complex by extensive scripting changes midway through production. The network, Investigation Discovery, was quite pleased with this poignant exploration of capital punishment in the United States. The doc marked the second time I had the privilege to work with Christian Bruyere of Mystique Films.

The film focuses on Tommy Zeigler, a man convicted of killing his wife, her mother and father, and another male in his Winter Garden, Florida furniture store on Christmas eve in 1975. He was sent to Death Row and as of 2014, he was still there. But did he actually do it? The documentary explores his case and exposes several faults of the judicial process along the way. It was narrated by actor Bruce Greenwood.

The timing of its release also coincided with a great debate in the U.S. over the use of Capital Punishment. After a botched execution in Oklahoma, President Obama stated there have been significant problems with the death penalty and ordered a policy review on executions. Several states, including Florida, responded by ramping up the number of their executions. On July 10th, 2014 (the day before “A Question of Innocence” premiered on Investigation Discovery), Florida carried out its seventh execution of that year.

A QUESTION OF INNOCENCE is produced for Investigation Discovery by Mystique Films with Christian Bruyere as executive producer. For Investigation Discovery, Ron Simon is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior Vice president of production, Kevin Bennett is general manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel, Destination America, and Discovery Fit & Health.
